About Us at Pratt & Gelsthorpe
Our History
Established in 1919 following the conclusion of the First World War, it has been over a century since Bert Gelsthorpe and Frank Pratt founded an engineering business on Baldertongate, Newark, situated on the Nottinghamshire-Lincolnshire border.
Initially providing engineering services to local businesses, the company flourished and diversified into motorcycle sales and service. It also generated electricity for the town before the establishment of the national grid, and by 1923, added an Austin car dealership, which became its primary focus.
The long-standing relationship with Austin continued as the brand evolved into BMC, then British Leyland, and finally Rover. However, in 1988, due to market changes, the decision was made to part ways with Rover.
By 1971, Bert's son John had assumed sole control of the company, and under his management in 1988, Pratt & Gelsthorpe became the main Peugeot dealer for Newark and the surrounding region—a decision that has proven to be highly successful, with Peugeot’s strong brand and reputation for quality vehicles helping to generate a high volume of business over the years.
Following John's retirement, his son Richard took over the leadership of the company. Richard, along with the family and staff, continues to uphold the high standards of personal service that have contributed to the company's long-standing success. This dedication not only ensures the satisfaction of existing customers but also attracts many new clients through the quality of services offered which will ensure the company continues to thrive in the future.
